Service Overview

## What's covered, who it's for, when to call.

### What it is

Radiator work covers everything from swapping a single tired panel to adding new circuits for an extension or loft conversion. We calculate the heat loss of each room, specify a radiator with the output to match, run or adapt the pipework, fit thermostatic valves and rebalance the whole system so the new radiator doesn't starve the rest of the house.

### Who it's for

Homeowners upgrading rusted panels to modern column or designer radiators. Anyone with a room that never quite gets warm. Households extending, converting a loft or garage, or refitting a bathroom and wanting a heated towel rail on the heating circuit rather than an electric one.

### When it's needed

When a radiator leaks at the valve or the panel itself, when a room is persistently cold despite the rest of the house being fine, when you're decorating and want the old panels gone, or when you're adding a room. Radiator work is far easier to schedule in spring and autumn than in the middle of a cold snap.

### Why a professional matters

Sizing is where DIY and cheap fits go wrong. A radiator too small will never heat the room whatever you do at the thermostat; one too large wastes fuel and unbalances the circuit. Add in the need to drain and refill correctly, re-dose inhibitor and rebalance the system afterwards, and it's a job that pays to have done once, properly.

The Cost of Waiting

## A cold room is rarely the radiator's fault alone.

Before we quote a new radiator we work out why the current one isn't performing. It's usually one of these:

- The radiator was never big enough for the room — common in extensions where the original circuit was simply extended without recalculation.
- Sludge has filled the bottom third of the panel, so only the top is heating and the output is a fraction of what the label claims.
- The system was never balanced, so radiators nearest the boiler take the flow and the far end of the house stays cool.
- Old valves have seized or the thermostatic head has failed closed, which looks exactly like a dead radiator until you test it.

The Consequence

Replacing a radiator without fixing the underlying cause means paying twice and still being cold. We diagnose first, then quote — and often the fix is cheaper than the new radiator you came to us for.

Our Process

## Five steps. No surprises.

01

### Survey and heat loss

Room dimensions, glazing, insulation and exposure measured, and a required output in watts calculated for every radiator in scope.

02

### Specification and quote

We show you options — panel, column, designer, towel rail — with the output each needs to deliver, then quote a fixed price in writing.

03

### Fit

System drained down or radiators isolated where possible, brackets set level and secure, pipework adapted neatly, TRVs and lockshields fitted.

04

### Refill and inhibit

System refilled, vented, pressure checked and re-dosed with corrosion inhibitor to protect the new metal you've just added.

05

### Balance and check

Every radiator balanced by flow temperature so the whole house heats evenly, and the old units removed and disposed of.

Why Choose On-Tap

## The benefits, plainly stated.

### Correctly sized output

Heat loss calculated per room, so a new radiator actually warms the space rather than just filling the wall.

### Neat, considered pipework

Runs planned to be as discreet as possible, floors protected, and everything cleaned up before we leave.

### Even heat across the house

Full system rebalance after every install — the step most fitters skip and the reason rooms disagree with each other.

### Lower running costs

Correct sizing and TRVs on every radiator let you heat the rooms you use and stop paying for the ones you don't.

### Any radiator type

Standard panels, traditional cast-style columns, vertical designer units and heated towel rails, in any finish.

### Guaranteed workmanship

12-month workmanship guarantee alongside the manufacturer warranty on the radiators and valves we supply.

In Depth

## Radiator installation done properly — the detail that matters.

Fitting a radiator takes an hour. Fitting the right radiator, in the right place, on a system that then works better rather than worse, takes knowledge. Here's what that involves.

### Heat loss calculation and sizing

Every room loses heat at a rate set by its volume, external wall area, glazing, insulation level and exposure. We calculate that figure in watts and specify a radiator whose output at your system's actual flow temperature meets it — not the manufacturer's headline figure, which is usually quoted at a delta-T most modern condensing systems never run at. This distinction matters enormously on low-temperature and heat-pump-ready systems, where an under-specified radiator simply cannot deliver.

### Choosing between panel, column, designer and towel rails

Standard convector panels give the most output per pound and per millimetre of wall. Traditional columns suit period properties in Bedford, Hitchin and the villages, and hold heat well, but need more wall length for the same output. Vertical designer radiators free up wall space in kitchens and hallways at a price premium. Heated towel rails look right in a bathroom but produce far less heat than people expect — in a cold bathroom we'll usually recommend a rail plus a small panel or underfloor loop rather than a rail alone.

### Adding radiators to an existing system

Extensions, loft conversions and garage conversions all need new circuits, and the first question is whether the existing boiler and pipework can carry the extra load. We check boiler output against the new total heat requirement, assess whether the existing 15mm or microbore runs can supply the additional flow, and where necessary upsize the primary pipework. Adding radiators to a system already at capacity is how people end up with a warm extension and a cold upstairs.

### Balancing, TRVs and system protection

After any radiator change the system must be rebalanced: lockshield valves adjusted so each radiator receives its correct share of flow, verified by measuring the temperature drop across each unit. We fit thermostatic valves to every radiator except the one on the room housing the thermostat, and we re-dose inhibitor whenever a system has been drained. Where sludge is present we'll recommend a power flush at the same time rather than pumping dirty water through your new radiators on day one.

FAQs

## Questions, answered.

Anything else? Call [07815 022377](tel:+447815022377).

How much does it cost to replace a radiator? +

A straight like-for-like swap on existing pipework is usually the lower hundreds including the radiator and valves. Column and designer units, repositioning, or new pipework runs cost more. Every job is quoted at a fixed written price after survey.

Can you fit a radiator where there isn't one now? +

Yes. We plan the pipework route, check the existing system has spare capacity, and fit the new circuit with TRVs — then rebalance the house so the addition doesn't rob heat from other rooms.

How long does a radiator installation take? +

A single swap on existing pipework is typically a half-day job. A full set of radiators throughout a house is usually one to two days depending on the number of units and whether pipework needs altering.

Do designer and column radiators heat as well as panels? +

They can, but you need more of them or a larger unit for the same output. We calculate the required watts per room first and then find a radiator you like that meets it, rather than the other way round.

Should I power flush at the same time? +

If your existing radiators are sludged, yes. Fitting clean new radiators onto a dirty system contaminates them almost immediately. We'll tell you plainly whether your system water justifies it.

Do you remove and dispose of the old radiators? +

Yes — old units are drained, removed and taken away for recycling as part of the job, and floors are protected throughout.

What areas do you cover? +

We install and replace radiators across Bedford, Milton Keynes, Luton, Hitchin, Flitwick, Biggleswade, Barton-le-Clay, Stevenage and the surrounding Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire region.
